Read Across Canada Challenge

Come along as we read our way across Canada following the Trans Canada Trail. So far we've made it 414 km along the trail.

You can be a part of this expedition by READING!!

Every 30 minutes that you read will move us 2 kilometres along the Trail

The first leg of our journey will be through BC, Alberta, Yukon, ending at the Arctic Ocean in the Northwest Territories. Starting at Victoria BC, our goal is to reach the Arctic Ocean at the northern end of the Trans Canada Trail by June 2009 -- A total of about 4500 km.

Start now to keep track of the time you spend reading outside of your school lessons. Each week you are invited to email your teacher with the total number of hours spent reading that week. Primary students can record the time that someone reads to them.

Each week the total time will be used to track how far we have travelled.

Click here to track our progress!.

Come in to the school and browse the Library for books to borrow or check out our online Library search and borrowing opportunity at http://library.prn.bc.ca/

Box of Books Program

A new service that we are offering through our library is the ‘Box of Books’ program. As our teachers travel around our region and visit our families, we will be bring along a box of library books. Of course we would like to bring books that are of interest and value to our students. When your teacher contacts you to arrange a visit to your home, please give them an idea of what kind of library books you would like them to bring. We will do our best to bring books that are of interest to you.

About the TumbleBookLibrary:

The TumbleBookLibrary is a collection of TumbleBooks (animated, talking picture books) TumblePuzzles, and TumbleQuizzes, as well as TumbleResources for teachers. TumbleBooks are created from existing picture books which we have licensed from children's book publishers and converted to the TumbleBook format.

To access our account on TumbleBooks Library click on the banner below!

Navigating the Site:
You may want to explore the site by checking out all the books, games and features. Our catalogue has book descriptions, book reviews, and author/illustrator/publisher information. You can view a TumbleBook by clicking on the ‘View Online” button or on the cover of the book. There are a number ways you can access a book:

The index page lists all the TumbleBooks and TumbleGames. Click on the hyperlink and it will take you right to that TumbleBook.

Scroll through the collection in any of the sections to read the descriptions and view the reading levels.

Add your favorite title(s) to the My Favorites section for easy access any time. This feature is cookied onto individual computers.

TumbleSearch:
Our online search allows you to search by title, author, publisher, and language. In addition, you can search by reading levels: in both Automatic and Manual modes.

Automatic/Manual Button:
TumbleBooks are designed to be experienced in either automatic or manual mode. In automatic mode, the pages turn by themselves and are narrated; in manual mode, the narration is turned off and users turn the pages at their own speed.

The Pause Button:
Both the student and teacher can use the pause button to stop the story at any time in order to practice story prediction, interpret pictures, discuss new vocabulary words, empathize with a character, discuss possible consequences of actions, encourage problem solving, or provide historical, geographical, or other perspectives.

Word Helper:
This feature allows you to click on a book to hear a sentence repeated, or click on a vocabulary word in order to hear it pronounced.

Reading Levels:
Each title has recommended reading levels for both automatic and manual modes. Click on the reading level to see other books at the same level.

Book Reports:
Students can create their own book reports after reading a book. You may fill out the online form or print it out.

TumbleQuizzes:
Each title has an accompanying TumbleQuiz: a fun, flash-animated, multiple-choice quiz that each student can take online after reading a book to test their reading comprehension.

TumbleGames:
The TumblePuzzles and TumbleGames are great educational tools.

Language Learning:
Our Language Learning section has a growing collection of books in Spanish and French.

Navigate en Español/ en Français:
Our drop down menu on the top right hand corner of the site allows you to view the entire site in Spanish or French.

TumbleMailer and Record-a-Book Feature
Your students and staff members can now send TumbleCards and TumbleBooks to friends and family through our TumbleMailer feature. They can also narrate and record their own TumbleBooks!

TumblePlayer:
The TumblePlayer allows students, teachers, librarians and parents to preload a number of TumbleBooks in an online player in order to be played one after another. Perfect for library story time. The TumblePlayer works just like an online music player.
