Semester 2

Well, here we are halfway through the school year-- exciting for those of you who have been plugging away at your schoolwork and a bit of a panic for those of you who haven't... I'm excited to be assembling lots of adapted Science and Social Studies units these days and seeing my students have good success with them. Everyday brings something new at this job and I'm glad I can take part in my students' academic plans.

December is here!

It's hard to believe that we're just a few weeks away from the "most wonderful time of the year," but we are! This week my intermediate report cards are going out and then we blast into Term 2 for both my high school and intermediate students. Christmas break lasts from December 18th to January 4th, so don't try to call me then.... I'll be curled up in front of my fireplace with a good book and a cup of tea. Merry Christmas, everyone!

What exactly do I do?

Just in case there is a potential new student or parent out there in NBCDES' catchment area wondering what Learning Assistance looks like at a Distance Education school, I thought I'd write a bit about it. When students are unable to do grade level work (for whatever reason... intellectual disability, autism, etc...) then they come and work with me. I assess the student to find what the he/she is currently able to do and then design an academic program to meet individual needs. I assess and report on the students' progress and monitor it closely to make sure the student is being challenged, yet having success. Some students complete a fully modified school program and earn a Leaving Certificate at the end of Grade 12. Some other students fill in the gaps in their schooling and move back into the regular academic stream to earn their Dogwood Diploma. A very exciting new development in my experience is a student graduating with her Leaving Certificate AND entering the dual credit program with a local college to earn her college diploma in a trades program by the end of her Grade 12 year. (Wow. When I started teaching, I didn't even know things like this were possible.)

On a daily basis, this looks like... parent/student meetings... me scrambling around the building putting assignments and units together to send out... scanning and marking student work... and a bit of administrative paperwork just to keep me on my toes. I'm really pleased to have the privilege of matching students with the right assignments and coursework. It's challenging, but very fulfilling.

Secondary Reports- Work cut-off Nov 12

Hi Everyone. I hope your fall is going as well as mine is. I just wanted to put out a note letting my students know that I need to receive all your Term 1 work by this Thursday, Nov.12, in order for it to be included on your report card.
Take care and keep up the good work, Lana.

Groundhog Day

Hi all.  Happy Groundhog Day!

I hope you're working hard on your courses so I keep really busy marking-- ha, ha.  Just a little reminder to my elementary students that your report cards are coming out at the beginning of March, so you need to have all completed work to me by mid February.

Enjoy the nice weather out there!  Mrs. C.

Welcome!

Mrs.ClarkeHi.  My name is Mrs. Lana Clarke and I am a Learning Assistant and Inclusion teacher here at NBCDES.  I originally studied biology at the University of Northern British Columbia before I completed a secondary education degree and became a teacher.

A little bit about me-- I have a wonderful little family consisting of my husband, my son (born January 2008), and myself.  I was born and raised in Fort St. John and I really enjoy living in the North.  My favorite things to do are reading, cooking, going to the gym, singing, and spending lots of quality time with my family.

Working at NBCDES is a wonderful thing.  The students are great and I love to find new and interesting courses for my them to enjoy.

Cheers!
